Fractional marketing
How fractional marketing solves the time crunch.
Marketing has a habit of landing on the busiest person in the business. Fractional marketing puts an experienced marketer inside your team for part of the week, so the work gets done and you get your time back.

Why marketing keeps landing on the busiest desk
If you run a business, lead a sales team or head up a small marketing department, you’ll probably recognise this. You’re meant to be setting the direction. Instead, you’re writing the newsletter, chasing the designer and dealing with whatever landed in your inbox first thing this morning.
Usually, it comes down to workload. Too much sits with too few people. In a smaller firm, the marketing lead often doubles as copywriter, project manager and the person who chases the printer. Each switch between those jobs pulls focus away from the work that actually brings in enquiries.
Business owners feel it just as sharply. Marketing matters, so it stays on the list. However, it keeps slipping behind jobs that feel more urgent, so it ends up stop-start and never builds momentum. It’s the pattern I see most often with the manufacturers and construction suppliers I work with.
What is fractional marketing?
Fractional marketing means bringing an experienced marketer into your business on a part-time basis. You get the judgement of a seasoned marketer for a fraction of the cost of a permanent hire. They write the plan, and then they carry it out.
The arrangement flexes around what you need. Some businesses want the whole marketing function looked after week to week, from strategy through to posts, emails and videos. Others need help with one area, such as a website rebuild, a product launch or a steady flow of content. Either way, you keep control of the decisions while the marketer handles the work.
A full-time hire can look like the obvious fix until you add up the real cost. On top of the salary, there’s recruitment, onboarding and holiday cover. The government’s guide to employing someone for the first time lists further costs, such as National Insurance and pension contributions. That’s a lot to take on for a role you may not be able to keep busy five days a week.
How fractional marketing gives you your time back
The biggest change is that marketing stops waiting for you. Someone with the time and know-how owns it, so the plan gets written and work goes out on schedule. Your job shifts from doing the marketing to approving it.
In practice, far fewer jobs land on your desk. I draft the content, brief the photographer, schedule the posts and report back on what’s working. As a result, marketing becomes a short weekly check-in, and you get the rest of your week back.
Decisions get made faster too. When the person doing the work knows your products and customers, you skip the background briefing every time. Consequently, small jobs stay small, and bigger projects actually reach the finish line.
“Your job shifts from doing the marketing to approving it.”
Fractional marketing, a full-time hire or an agency?
Each option suits a different stage, so it’s worth being honest about the trade-offs. A full-time marketer makes sense once there’s enough work to fill every day and someone senior to manage them. Until then, you’re paying for capacity you might not use.
Agencies are good at set pieces of work, such as an advertising campaign or a one-off design project. However, they usually work from the outside, and many bill by the hour. That can turn every extra request into a cost decision. What they know about your business can also depend on who’s looking after your account that month.
Fractional marketing sits in between. You get senior experience and steady output for one fixed monthly fee, which at Ventiv includes the software. Because the same person works with you month after month, their understanding of your business keeps building.
What it looks like when I join your team
At Ventiv, I work as part of your team. I join your meetings, use your systems and learn how you like things done. Over time, I become the person your team turns to for anything marketing related.
The work is fitted around your business. For owners, that usually means running the whole marketing function with a clear focus on enquiries and sales. For in-house teams, it often means extra senior help to clear a backlog or run a stalled project. You can read more on our pages for business owners and marketing teams.
Being based in Harrogate also means I can be there in person when it matters. That might be filming on a factory floor or sitting in on a sales meeting. Clients tell me they value how I fit in and how much I listen before suggesting anything. My test for every piece of work is simple: would I be happy saying it to the client over a coffee?
How to tell if fractional marketing is right for you
If any of these sound familiar, it’s probably worth a conversation.
1
Marketing keeps slipping down your list, even though you know it matters.
2
You need senior marketing thinking but can’t justify a full-time manager.
3
Your team is capable but stretched, and projects keep stalling halfway.
If that sounds like you, have a look at what I do and the jobs I could take off your plate.
Fractional marketing: your questions answered
How much does fractional marketing cost compared to a full-time hire?
Usually a fraction of a full-time salary, because you only pay for the support you need. You also avoid recruitment fees, onboarding and holiday cover. At Ventiv, it’s one fixed monthly fee with software included, so there are no surprises.
Is fractional marketing better than using an agency?
It depends on what you need. An agency suits a set project with a clear brief. A fractional marketer joins your team and learns your business, so their understanding builds over time. If continuity and an in-house feel matter to you, fractional support usually fits better.
What if we already have someone doing marketing in-house?
That works well. A fractional marketer can add the senior experience your team is missing or take on the overflow. They work alongside your people, leaving them free to focus on what they do best.
Who is fractional marketing best suited to?
Small and medium-sized businesses that need experienced marketing support but can’t justify a full-time manager or director. That often means owners carrying marketing on top of running the company, or in-house teams that need extra help with a project.
How quickly can a fractional marketer get started?
Far quicker than a recruitment process. After an initial chat, the first few weeks are usually spent learning your business and agreeing a plan, so everything that follows is built on solid foundations.
